Prayer Team

Ministry description

The Prayer Team helps Messiah become a praying church—not only a church that has prayers on Sunday. The team builds consistent prayer rhythms for the people of Messiah, church leaders and ministries, the building/space, and the wider community. This includes a prayer training class, focused intercession, monthly prayer team meetings, praying over the building and ministries (as requested), and optional prayer walks in the neighborhood.

Core activities

• Maintain and pray through a current prayer list with clear confidentiality guidelines

• Pray regularly for the congregation, leaders, ministries, and outreach

• Pray over the building/rooms (for worship, children, youth, hospitality, and care upon request)

• Coordinator provide simple prayer prompts so the whole church can participate (monthly focus, prayer partners, etc.)

• Optional Activity: organized prayer walks in the community (quietly, respectfully, consistently)

• Optional Activity: Praying in the front of the sanctuary after worship service.

Prayer Team Member — responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality (this is MOST important)—especially around sensitive prayer requests

• Commit to training: “How to Pray for Others” one-time class

• Commit to regular prayer (individually and/or with the team) for Messiah and its people

• Pray through assigned lists or monthly focuses consistently

• Participate in prayer meetings/activities as able and willing (not all activities are required); show up faithfully and on time

• Use a gracious, non-gossipy tone: prayer is not a backdoor for sharing information

• Communicate updates to the coordinator (e.g., answered prayers, urgent concerns that need pastoral awareness)

• If you are willing, participate in prayer walks and/or prayer in front after worship respectfully (quiet, unobtrusive, safety-aware)

Estimated time  Typical: 1+ hours/week plus prayer meeting time
